How to combat common household stains.
Try as we might, there’s just no way to avoid stains one hundred percent of the time. By regularly cleaning your home and performing a deep cleaning occasionally, you can remove most stains, but this isn’t the most efficient way to manage cleaning tasks.
Many homeowners opt for a professional cleaning service by a local cleaning company to keep their homes looking great, but it’s important that you also learn how to take care of certain stains between visits. Let’s look at six common household stains you’ll find your home and how to properly clean them.
Pet Urine
Fur babies are awesome, but their urine certainly is not. If your dog or cat has an accident, start off by absorbing as much as you can with a paper towel and then soak the stain in white vinegar. Next, spread out a small amount of baking soda onto the stain and let everything stay there for at least three or four hours. Once that time has passed, simply vacuum it all up.
Red Wine
This stain is perhaps every homeowner’s nightmare because they can be very difficult to remove. First, dab the stained area (whatever you do, don’t rub it) with paper towels and then cover the stain with a heathy amount of salt. Next, pour club soda over the stain and check it after a few hours. If the stain persists, mix three parts hydrogen peroxide and one part liquid dish soap, pour it over the stain, let it stay there a while, and repeat the process as needed.
Pizza Grease
A grease stain from pizza and similar food items can really mess up fabric and carpet. The good news is that it’s not too difficult to remove if you act quickly. Pour a healthy amount of either baking soda or cornstarch over the stain, both of which will absorb it.
Leave it for just a few minutes, remove the baking soda or cornstarch, and then place a small drop of dish detergent onto the stain. Finally, dab it with a wet paper towel to clean the rest.
Scuff Marks
It’s easy for your home to get plagued by scuff marks because they can be caused by anything from your shoe hitting a wall to a suitcase or briefcase banging against the door. The good news is that they’re also easy to clean up!
The best product out there is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Just use it as directed and the scuff mark will typically come right off. Just be sure not to rub too hard so that you don’t damage the paint.
Coffee
Spilling coffee can be a terrible feeling because not only have you caused a mess, but you also failed to finish your wake-up! Luckily, it’s easy to clean a coffee stain even if you’re still half asleep. Start off by dabbing the area with a paper towel and then pouring a small amount of cold water onto the stain before dabbing it again.
Once much of it has been removed, mix one tablespoon of white vinegar, one tablespoon of dish detergent, and two cups of warm water. Apply this cleaning solution using a towel and then dab it up with a paper towel. Repeat as necessary.
Grass
Although getting a little down and dirty outside is great for both adults and children, it’s not so great when you get grass stains on your clothes and then transfer that to the furniture or carpet. To get it cleaned up, mix one-half tsp of laundry detergent and two cups of cold water. Using a cloth, blot the stain with the mixture, beginning on the outside and moving toward the center. Keep doing that until the stain is gone, apply cold water, and blot it dry.
